Kindergarten Readiness Seminar

Is your child ready for Kindergarten?

Join Calvary Day School as Dr. Melanie Powell shares guidance with parents of preschoolers on how to know if your child is ready socially, physically, academically and emotionally for Kindergarten at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, January 31. During the seminar, Dr. Powell will give parents practical ways to assess their child and things to do to help prepare them for their first year in elementary school. Dr. Powell received a B.A. in Psychology from Furman University (1993), and an M.A. (1995) and Ph.D. in School Psychology with a Specialization in Neuropsychology from the University of Georgia (1997). She is a Licensed Psychologist (NC#2478) and Health Services Provider (HPP) & a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). Her training includes a year of practicum, three years at the Center for Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology (UGA), a one-year internship in the public school setting (GA), and pre- and post-doctoral fellowships at the Child Neuropsychology Clinic at the Medical College of Georgia. Her research is in the areas of Learning Disabilities and ADHD (including articles in professional journals and book chapters), which she has presented at national and international professional conferences. She also has served as a reviewer for manuscripts submitted for publication in the Journal of Learning Disabilities (1999).

Dr. Powell married and moved to Charlotte in 1998 and began working in a multi-disciplinary group, providing psychological services. She joined Charlotte Behavioral Health Associates as a sole proprietor in December of 2000. While in private practice, she also served an adjunct professor at UNC-Charlotte for two years (Fall 1999 – Spring 2001) teaching Assessment and Research Methods to Masters-level students in the Education and Counseling programs. Dr. Powell and her husband have two daughters.
