Coaches' Bio
Varsity Head Coach - Wendy Cassada
Wendy Cassada has been coaching Cross Country at Calvary Day School for 8 of the past 9 years. Wendy helped start the middle school cross country program in 2014 which has seen tremendous growth in both participants and results. She has a heart for leading young athletes in a biblical truth and passion for making sure the lessons of Jesus are present in practices and meets at all times.
As a runner, Wendy has used her personal training and experience of 30+ years of running to shape the results she gets from her teams. She has also taken multiple online classes through NASM (National Academy of Science Medicine). Wendy has run 14 marathons, 3 ultra marathons, and multiple half marathons, including two Boston Marathon medals, as well as qualifying for the New York Marathon.
Varsity Head Coach- Tim Montgomery
Coach Tim Montgomery has over 25 years of experience of coaching at the middle school and high school levels. His coaching experience includes basketball, cross-country, track, and soccer. He established the high school athletic program at Noble Academy in Greensboro serving as athletic director as well as head basketball coach and head cross-country coach for several years. For 23 years he has served as the commissioner of the Independent School League in Guilford County. The ISL is a coed athletic league where students from six area independent schools participate in cross-country, soccer, flag football, volleyball, and basketball. This is his second year coaching track for the Cougars, and he coached cross country with Coach Wendy Cassada this year as well.
In his high school years Tim had an outstanding athletic career at East Forsyth High School excelling in cross-country, basketball, and track, being voted all City-County and all Conference as well as East Forsyth’s Athlete of the Year in his senior year. He followed that with a brief track career at Appalachian State before an injury ended his final season.
Tim and his wife Cindy have 3 grown children and have nine grandchildren. Their daughter Ashley and her husband Taylor along with 5 of their children serve as missionaries at the Rift Valley Academy in Kenya. His oldest grandson Max is currently a freshman at Carolina University and a member of the basketball team. His sons Adam and Alex are both married and live in Shelby and Salisbury respectively with their families. Tim and Cindy are active members of Triad Baptist Church in Kernersville and both have served on the mission committee which Tim chaired for many years.
Tim is very excited to continue his coaching efforts with the Cougars after many years in school administration and is grateful for the opportunity to continue sharing his knowledge and experience at a fine institution like Calvary Day School.
Varsity Head Coach- Karen Simmons
My name is Karen Simmons. I am the wife to my amazing husband, Matthew, and we have four boys. My third son Joshua came to Calvary last year and we are excited that our youngest, Stephen, will become a Calvary Cougar this year as well. The school is above and beyond what I could have asked or imagined, and I am thankful that I have been given the opportunity to become a part of Calvary as a coach.
I played volleyball, swam, and ran track/ XC in high school. In college I continued playing volleyball as a middle hitter and blocker, and I also swam for Salem College. In addition to being a full time mom, I am now a Fitness Trainer, Personal Trainer, and coach. Last year I coached volleyball at Mt Tabor high school. I can’t wait to coach at Calvary this year!
God has given me the gift of encouragement and enthusiasm. My deep passion as a coach is to encourage athletes to push themselves out of their comfort zone and to see who and whose they are in Christ. I want to teach athletes to stop relying on themselves, but rather CHRIST who strengthens them (Philippians 4:13). I want to teach them to give God all the glory and to become the salt of the world through Christ Jesus! Christ can make you so much more, whether during your workout, game, or in everyday life! So, “whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”(Colossians 3:23).
