Upper School Extracurriculars
We offer a variety of extracurricular activities for our 7th-12th grade students. Students are empowered to lead and create clubs making a unique and personalized experience for all involved.
Calvary Crazies
Student Council & Executive Leadership Council
-
It is our goal at Calvary Day School to provide opportunities for our students in Upper School to pursue and develop leadership, interests, and talents both in and beyond the classroom. One was is by serving on the Student Council. Class representatives for the Student Council are elected from all US grades.
-
A second leadership opportunity, and CDS's highest leadership position for a student, is reserved for five seniors to serve on the Executive Leadership Council (ELC). ELC work directly with administration and meet weekly to channel ideas and suggestions and unify the student body in spirit and cooperation towards common goals. This group also manages the student councils at each grade level. Elections are held in the spring before the last day of school.
Theater
Our Upper School Fine Arts department hosts three different productions throughout the school year. Students are encouraged to audition for each production, regardless of their past experiences or if they are currently in the theater class. In the fall we have our 9th-12th grade drama production. In the winter, our 6th-8th grade students perform in another drama production. Our spring musical is open to all grades in the Upper School as well as selected grades in our Lower School.
Clubs
Clubs in the Upper School are student-led and do vary from year to year as interest in student leaders shifts, with that being said there are some clubs which are annual each year.
-
Ethics Club
-
Club where students discuss real-life ethical issues. During the club meetings, the group works to prepare for the annual Ethics Bowl at UNC Chapel Hill. In each round of competition, teams take turns analyzing cases about complex ethical dilemmas and responding to questions and comments from the other team and from a panel of judges. An ethics bowl differs from a debate competition in that students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whichever position they think is correct, provide each other with constructive criticism, and win by demonstrating that they have thought rigorously and systematically about the cases and engaged respectfully and supportively with all participants. Data from NHSEB surveys shows that this event teaches and promotes ethical awareness, critical thinking, civil discourse, civic engagement, and an appreciation for hearing multiple points of view.

Youth and Government Club (YAG)
-
YAG is for students 9-12. Youth and Government is a mock state government totally run by students. Students take on the roles of house representatives, senators, and even executive positions. Students write their own bills and work to get them passed into YAG law. This is a great interactive experience.

-
Debate Club
-
Debate club is offered twice a week and offers students the opportunity to prepare for their upcoming competitions. Students work together to craft their briefs and practice their presentations. Debates include Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Mock Trial, and Moot Court.
