Coaches' Bio
Varsity Head Coach/ JV Assistant Coach- Kaylee Barriage
Kaylee Barriage from Hope Mills, NC, graduated in the Gray's Creek High School 2019 class. She is an alumna of Sandhills Volleyball Club, where she has played from 2012–2019. She began attending Carolina University in the fall of 2019. In 2019 and 2022, Kaylee and the Carolina Bruins won the NCCAA Volleyball Regional Championships. Kaylee graduated from Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While attending Carolina University, she excelled in the classroom, graduating cum laude, and has had several recognitions on the Dean's List and student-athlete awards. She has completed five years of collegiate volleyball and is now pursuing a Master's degree in occupational therapy. Kaylee has been coaching club volleyball for a while now with Traid United Volleyball Academy. She is excited to continue her journey in coaching with Calvary Day School. She wants to continue to enhance the mindset of young Christian athletes, help them excel on and off the court, and continue to help them pursue a Christ-centered student-athlete mindset. She resides in Winston-Salem, NC, with her fur baby boxer, Libby Rose Barriage.
JV Head Coach/ Varsity Assistant Coach- Amy Russell
I am ecstatic to be this year's Head JV Volleyball Coach and Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach. I graduated from Campbell University in 2023 and I am now a 5th Grade Teacher at Calvary Day School. During my time in high school at CDS I played volleyball for many years! I am beyond excited to step into the role of coaching as Volleyball is one of my passions. I work to push the athletes to leave everything they have on the court by using their skills.
MS Head Coach- Karen Simmons
My name is Karen Simmons, and I am delighted to be this year’s MS volleyball coach! I am the wife to my amazing husband, Matthew, and we have four boys. My third son Joshua came to Calvary last year and we are excited that our youngest, Stephen, will become a Calvary Cougar this year as well. The school is above and beyond what I could have asked or imagined, and I am thankful that I have been given the opportunity to become a part of Calvary as a coach.
I played volleyball, swam, and ran track/ XC in high school. In college I continued playing volleyball as a middle hitter and blocker, and I also swam for Salem College. In addition to being a full time mom, I am now a Fitness Trainer, Personal Trainer, and coach. Last year I coached volleyball at Mt Tabor high school. I can’t wait to coach at Calvary this year!
God has given me the gift of encouragement and enthusiasm. My deep passion as a coach is to encourage athletes to push themselves out of their comfort zone and to see who and whose they are in Christ. I want to teach athletes to stop relying on themselves, but rather CHRIST who strengthens them (Philippians 4:13). I want to teach them to give God all the glory and to become the salt of the world through Christ Jesus! Christ can make you so much more, whether during your workout, game, or in everyday life! So, “whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”(Colossians 3:23)
MS Head Coach- Scott Tolentino
